The Russell St Congregation

The Russell St congregation was founded in 1672 at Horton Hall. Moved in 1689 to Wibsey Fold - the chapel still survives as a cottage. The congregation moved again in 1719 to Toad Lane, later called Chapel Lane where a large gothic building was erected in 1869. The Rev. Frank Bullock, father of the distinguished historian Lord Alan Bullock was an influential minister from 1927 to 1964. This building was demolished in 1969 for city centre development and a new building, the present church, was built in a quiet area close to the city centre and University.

The Broadway Avenue Congregation

We members of Broadway Avenue congregation moved out of our church in Marshfields, Bradford in April 2006 after celebrating on hundred years of Sunday school education. It is interesting to note that the school was started before the church. Education over the years has of course changed with the times and yet one ethos has always remained. Children have never been indoctrinated and told what to believe, instead they are guided and encouraged to find their own truth through their own experiences in a supportive community.

The old church was built as a temporary building in 1906. Although we could have remained and spent time and money on a poor building it was decided that we would move to the Bradford Unitarian Church in Russell Street situated less than two miles away from the old church.

We decided to do this so that we could focus on Unitarian worship and community. Services are every Sunday morning at 10-45 and we invite visiting ministers, lay preachers or members of our own church to lead worship. We give freedom of the pulpit to those who are invited to lead our worship. We meet in a spirit of freedom reason and tolerance accepting our differences yet being able to come together in worship. We enjoy like drinking tea and talking together and some say that this is the most important part of the service. There are also other activities located in our news letter on this site.

If you are a free thinker and have a spiritual dimension in your life and wish to journey with others with similar values please feel free to come along one Sunday morning.

Chairperson for 2006/7
